Mail Setup Instructions: Pine IMAP-SSL

  1. You must be running Pine 4.30 or later.
  2. Start up Pine.
  3. From Pine's main menu: o S) Setup o C) Config o scroll down to "inbox-path" o C) Change value o set it to "{disorder.primate.net/ssl/user=YOURUSERNAME/novalidate-cert}INBOX" o E) Exit setup o Y) yes, commit changes
  4. Now quit Pine and run Pine again. You'll be prompted for your password. You'll now be accessing your INBOX via IMAP/SSL.
  5. To have Pine-IMAP/SSL use the folders that are already in your IMAP space, you have to create a Pine Collection. Do the following from Pine's main menu: o S) Setup o L) Collection List o A) Add collection o Nickname: disorder IMAP folders Server: disorde.primate.net/ssl/user=YOURUSERNAME/novalidate-cert Path: mail/ View: --leave this blank-- o type Ctrl-X to save this entry. o Y) Yes, save changes o E) Exit setup Note: You can specify any path where mail folders exist, usually the default is "mail/".
  6. From Pine's main menu, hit "L" to list folders. Select "disorder IMAP folders" and hit enter. You should see all your IMAP folders.
  7. By default Pine won't read subdirectories from your IMAP folders. Configure Pine to view subdirectories: o S) Setup o C) Configure o Scroll down to "enable-lame-list-mode" under "Folder Preferences" o x) type 'x' to enable this setting o E) Exit Setup o Y) Yes, Save changes Now you can view the subdirctories with the '>' command or view messages in that folder with the 'enter' key. Note: Pine defines "folders" as containing messages while "directories" contain more folders or directories. So for example you will see a "Saved[/]" entry when you list your folders. This means that Saved can serve as a folder or a directory, hence "[/]". So viewing it with ">" (actually just "." will work) will show subdirectories and folders but viewing it with "enter" will show you messages.
  8. If you have multiple email accounts on other servers and you want to have a different INBOX for each account, you need to do the following from Pine's main menu: o S) Setup o C) Configure o Scroll down to "enable-incoming-folders" under "Folder Preferences" o x) type 'x' to enable this setting o E) Exit Setup o Y) Yes, Save changes If set, this feature defines a pseudo-folder collection called "INCOMING MESSAGE FOLDERS". Initially, the only folder included in this collection will be your INBOX, which will no longer show up in your Default folder collection. You may add more folders to the Incoming Message Folders collection by using the "A Add" command in the FOLDER LIST screen. You will be prompted for the host the folder is stored on (which defaults to the same host used for your INBOX), a nickname, and the actual folder name. Once a set of Incoming Message Folders are defined, the TAB key (in MESSAGE INDEX or MESSAGE TEXT screens) may be used to scan the folders for those with Recent messages. If you add more folders to your Incoming-Folders collection, turning this feature back off will have no effect.
  9. To have Pine use your local mail resources also, do the following from Pine's main menu: o S) Setup o L) Collection List o A) Add collection o Nickname: Local folders Server: --leave this blank-- Path: mail/ View: --leave this blank-- o hit Ctrl-X to save this entry. o Y) Yes, save changes o E) Exit setup Note: You can specify any path where mail folders exist, usually the default is "mail/". From Pine's main menu, hit "L" to list folders. Select "Local folders" and hit enter. You should see all your Local folders.
  10. To copy mail from Local folders to IMAP folders, navigate to a folder you'd like to copy from and do the following: o ;) Select Criteria o A) Select All (Choose your specific selection criteria) o A) Apply o S) Save o ^T) Goto Folders o navigate to your target folder and hit enter twice to complete. Note: Make sure you have enable-aggregate-command-set enabled in your configuration options

There are several ways to accomplish this, some harmless experimentation with select is a good idea to familiarize yourself with this process. Note: Pine's configuration is saved in ~/.pinerc
